Over 7.5 lakh Indian students chose to study abroad in 2022

Canada, the UK, and the US are regarded as three of the top destinations to study abroad in 2022 for Indian students. There has been a hike of 68% among students.

More than 7.5 lakh Indian students preferred studying in Canada, the US, and the UK in 2022. In 2021, there were only 4,44,553 Indian students who were enrolled in higher education institutions. There was an increase of almost 68 per cent of Indian students who enrolled to study abroad. Since 2007, approximately 7,50,365 students have studied abroad.

The number of international students enrolled in 2020 was 62415, which further increased to 1,25,115 in 2021. Apart from that, there were approximately 43,624 and 1,02,688 Indian students in 2020 and 2021, respectively, who were planning to study in Canada. The recent ratio of students admitted to different countries shows that Canada is the second most preferred destination for study abroad.

In 2022, the number of students who wished to study in the UK was 1,32,709. In the earlier years, a smaller number of students were enrolled in the higher education institutions in the UK; thus, the UK became a popular destination among students.

Even so, Australia and Germany are counted among the most preferred locations to study for Indian students. There are multiple other countries that Indian students prefer to study in, including Singapore, Italy, the Philippines, France, Malaysia, the Netherlands, and Uzbekistan.

According to the chairman of the University Grants Commission, Prof. M. Jagadesh Kumar, Indian students will continue to get enrolled in higher education abroad. Apart from that, he mentions that the talks regarding international universities setting up campuses in India will not affect students visiting abroad.
