Indian students explore new study destinations amid Visa challenges:

Date:

The pursuit of higher education abroad has long been a dream for Indian students. However, recent policy changes in traditional study destinations like the USA, UK, Canada and Australia have led to a surge in visa rejections and increased regulations. As a result, Indian students are now looking beyond these countries to explore alternative study destinations that offer less stringent visa rules and more accommodating regulations.

The UK, once a popular choice for Indian students, has seen a significant decline in visa grants with a 6.2% reduction in primary applicants in March 2024. The removal of dependent allowances and increased restrictions have further deterred students from choosing the UK as their study destination.

Canada, another favored destination has introduced a temporary two-year cap on study permits and increased financial requirements, making it more challenging for Indian students to secure admission. The processing times for study permits have also been delayed, adding to the uncertainty.

Australia, too, has unveiled a new migration strategy focusing on genuine student requirements, aiming to restrict the number of international students. The increased visa fees and new requirements have made it more expensive and complicated for Indian students to study in Australia.

In response to these changes, Indian students are now exploring alternative destinations like Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands, Singapore, Malaysia and Japan. These countries offer English-taught programs, globally renowned universities, and more straightforward visa processes, making them attractive options for Indian students.

According to a Survey, Germany is gaining popularity with 50% of respondents identifying it as an appealing destination. Ireland has also seen significant growth, with international enrollment reaching a new peak in 2022-23.

The Netherlands, Singapore and Malaysia are investing heavily in their education sectors, offering better opportunities for Indian students. Also, Japan is emerging as a popular destination, with the Japanese Ambassador to India urging Indian students to explore Japan for skill development and job opportunities.

This shift in study destinations highlights the growing influence of countries beyond traditional Anglophone markets. As Indian students continue to seek quality education abroad, these emerging destinations are poised to benefit from the changing landscape.
