Indian students turn to domestic universities amid global uncertainty:

Date:

In a significant shift, Indian students are increasingly turning to domestic universities as a safer bet due to escalating global uncertainty. Study abroad platforms have reported a surge in inquiries for Indian colleges as backup options. The reasons include protests, political unrest, tighter visa policies, geopolitical tensions, and economic slowdown in popular study destinations like Canada, Australia and the UK.

Visa policy changes have led to higher rejection rates and Indian students are now exploring alternative options including quality education in India. After the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Bangladesh became another option for medical studies for some. But with the current unrest, Indian students are looking at alternative options, including India, said experts.
Volatile international markets have seen some companies quickly changing their business strategies.

Many platforms that helps students find colleges, is shifting focus to the domestic market due to evolving student preferences and economic improvements in India. Global universities setting up campuses in India and private universities introducing new programs have made studying in India more attractive.

Many education consulting firms are facilitating collaborations between Indian colleges and global universities, enhancing student mobility. The number of Indian students pursuing higher studies abroad grew 45% in 2023 but dipped to 1.28% in 2024, indicating a slowdown.

Experts say quality education is making inroads into smaller cities and states, making India an increasingly viable option for students who previously considered studying abroad.
