New Zealand to Double Student Visa Fees from October 1:

Date:

The New Zealand government has announced a significant increase in student visa fees, doubling the current cost from NZ$375 to NZ$750 starting October 1, 2024. This change is part of a broader effort to create a sustainable immigration system by shifting costs to visa applicants, reducing the reliance on taxpayer funding.

Immigration Minister Erica Stanford explained that the adjustments will lessen public funding needs by over NZ$563 million over the next four years. Despite the increase, New Zealand’s visa fees will remain competitive compared to countries like Australia, where student visa application fees recently rose to AUD$1,600.

A recent pulse survey found mixed reactions from prospective students with half indicating the higher visa fees would have little impact on their study plans. However, the other half expressed a higher degree of price sensitivity, with 22% saying the increase would have a “medium” impact and 28% noting it would have a “high” impact.

Since New Zealand’s borders reopened to international visitors in August 2022, the country has received 124,000 study visa applications, with an 85% approval rate. Immigration New Zealand also highlighted that agents can provide advice on student visas without being a licensed immigration advisor, provided they complete a student visa declaration form.

The fee hike aims to create a more sustainable immigration system, but its impact on international student enrollment remains to be seen. New Zealand’s education sector will be watching closely as the change takes effect in October.
