France Attracts Record Number of International Students in 2023-24

Date:

Campus France has announced a 4.6% increase in international student enrollment in France for the 2023-24 academic year, with a total of 430,466 students. This growth continues a trend of gradual expansion, following a 3% increase the previous year.

France now hosts approximately 1 in 6 international students in its higher education institutions. The country’s popularity is driven by renewed demand from the Asia-Pacific region, particularly China and India, with 6% and 12% growth respectively.

The top 10 countries for international student enrollment in France remain relatively stable, with Morocco being the only country to experience a decline (-4%). Algeria saw significant growth with a 7% increase.

Business schools are increasingly popular among international students, with an 11% increase in enrollment. Engineering schools also saw a 9% growth. Over the past five years, business schools have increased their share of total international students from 10% to 15%.

France’s higher education system boasts exceptional quality, with 25 institutions ranking in the global Top 1,000 and 18 in the Top 500, according to the Shanghai university rankings.

India Emerges as Key Market

A recent QS report highlights India’s growing interest in studying abroad, particularly in France. Indian students are attracted to business schools, with 31% considering France for Business and Management programs.

Rankings and reputation are crucial factors for Indian students, with 51% prioritizing a French institution’s high ranking and 52% emphasizing the importance of a good reputation.

Competition for Talent Intensifies

Donatienne Hissard, Director-General of Campus France, noted, “France, like any other major host country, continues its growth of mobilities and the competition to attract talent is fiercer than ever.

As global competition for international students intensifies, France’s commitment to quality education and innovation will remain crucial in attracting top talent.
