India-Canada Relations Hit Rock Bottom: Diplomatic Ties Severely Strained

Date:

India withdrew its High Commissioner and other targeted diplomats from Canada in a spectacular flare-up that severely strained diplomatic ties between the two countries. Following Canada’s accusations against India’s High Commissioner and other diplomats, which sparked a worsening crisis in India-Canada relations, this decision was made.

After Canada informed India that it had designated the High Commissioner and Indian diplomats as “persona non grata” in the Hardeep Nijjar murder case, a crisis broke out. India has insisted time and time again that Canada was unable to back up these assertions with reliable evidence. Stewart Wheeler, Canada’s Charge d’Affaires, asserted lately that Ottawa had presented “irrefutable evidence” of the involvement of Indian operatives in the crime.

India reacted with promptness and determination. Wheeler was called by the Ministry of External Affairs, which also provided him with a reply that was aggressively written and expressed India’s lack of confidence in the Justin Trudeau administration. India reported that its High Commissioner, Sanjay Verma, and other targeted diplomats were leaving Ottawa due to worries about their safety.

The relationship between India and Canada has been steadily declining over the past year, and this development represents a major setback. India has frequently voiced its concerns on the lack of security for Indian diplomats and Canada’s tolerance of extremist elements. The departure of Indian ambassadors is interpreted as the end of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

India and Canada have been at odds over the Hardeep Nijjar murder case. The terrorist Nijjar was a Khalistani and India has denied any participation in his death in Canada. But Canada has continued to claim that the killing was carried out by Indian operatives.
Violent demonstrations outside Indian diplomatic missions and at events that Indian diplomats attend have worsened the already tense relations between India and Canada. India has taken issue with Canada’s apparent tolerance of extremist organizations as well as its inability to offer sufficient security.

The bilateral relations between India and Canada will be greatly impacted by the Indian ambassadors’ departure. The two countries’ collaboration in trade, cultural exchange and education may suffer as a result. Concerns over the safety of Indian citizens in Canada are also raised by the diplomatic split.

Stewart Wheeler, Canada’s Charge d’Affaires, insisted that Ottawa had presented reliable proof to back up its assertions. India’s Ministry of External Affairs, however, refuted this, claiming that Canada had not produced sufficient proof.
Indian officials voiced worries about the security of their diplomats and their lack of faith in the Trudeau administration. A senior Indian official stated, “We are withdrawing because we do not feel safe for our diplomats.”

The diplomatic impasse between Canada and India has broad ramifications for world affairs. International collaboration on matters like trade, climate change mitigation and counterterrorism may be impacted by the tense relations between the two countries.
The world community is concerned as hostilities are becoming worse. An important turning point in the two countries’ failing ties is the departure of Indian diplomats from Canada.
