Indian Students Explore Global Study Options Amid US Visa Uncertainty

Date:

The revocation of US study visas and deletion of student information from the SEVIS system are causing concerns among Indian parents and students. As a result, international students are re-evaluating their options, and the US is no longer the only preferred destination.

According to recent trends, countries like Germany, France, and Ireland are gaining popularity among Indian students due to their high-quality education systems, welcoming immigration policies, and promising job markets. Germany, in particular, stands out for its low or no tuition fees and global reputation in engineering and applied sciences. France is known for its business, design, and healthcare-related programs, while Ireland has carved a niche in computer technology and life sciences.

The US, however, still remains a highly aspirational destination, especially for students targeting STEM education, research, design, and healthcare careers. Nevertheless, students are now more aware of the risks and are weighing their options carefully.

Indian students are actively considering alternative destinations, and countries like Germany, New Zealand, Australia, and Ireland have seen a surge in applications. Germany saw a 68% increase in Indian student enrolment between 2022 and 2024, while New Zealand experienced a 354% increase in Indian student applications. This spike is largely due to changes in its post-study work visa policies and strong job opportunities for graduates in IT, healthcare, and business.

Other countries, like Russia, are also attracting Indian students, with a 33.7% increase in student numbers in 2024. The UK, Australia, Germany, and Ireland are also popular among students, with the UK’s two-year Graduate Route and Australia’s improved visa pathways and job prospects making them attractive options. Singapore is also gaining traction, especially among students interested in business, finance, and technology.

The shift in student preferences is driven by factors such as visa ease, career opportunities, and long-term settlement options. Students are no longer limiting themselves to traditional destinations and are adapting quickly to changing circumstances. According to Gaurav Batra, Founder & CEO of Infinite Group, “Indian students are increasingly considering alternative destinations, and countries like Germany, New Zealand, Australia, and Ireland have seen a surge in applications.”

As the global education landscape grows, Indian students are becoming more discerning and data-driven in their decision-making. With multiple options available, students are prioritizing factors such as affordability, safety, and career prospects when choosing their study destination. The uncertainty surrounding US study visas has led to a shift in Indian students’ preferences, with alternative destinations gaining traction.
