Australia Introduces New Rules for International Students in 2024: A Comprehensive Guide

Date:

In an effort to regulate international student intake and promote genuine study-abroad aspirants, the Australian government has rolled out new rules for international students in 2024. These changes aim to improve the quality of international education programs, protect students, and support graduates in achieving their career goals.

Key Changes: A Detailed Breakdown

1. Genuine Student (GS) Requirement: Replacing the Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) requirement, the GS requirement involves a set of questions within the student visa application to assess the applicant’s genuineness. This change aims to ensure that students are genuinely interested in pursuing education in Australia.

2. English Language Requirements: The minimum IELTS score for Student visas has increased from 5.5 to 6.0, while the Temporary Graduate visa requires a minimum score of 6.5, with a minimum score of 5.5 for each component. This change aims to ensure that students have the necessary language skills to succeed in their studies.

3. Financial Requirements: Students must demonstrate access to AU$29,710 to cover living expenses for one year, with additional funds required for partners and children. This change aims to ensure that students have the necessary financial resources to support themselves during their studies.

4. Visa Hopping Restrictions: Australia will limit ‘visa hopping’ between temporary visas that do not offer a pathway to permanent residency. This change aims to prevent students from abusing the visa system by constantly switching between temporary visas.

5. Post-Study Work Visas: The length of post-study work visas will change, but Australia’s Temporary Graduate visa will still provide time to gain valuable work experience and demonstrate skills to Australian employers. This change aims to support graduates in achieving their career goals.

6. Skills in Demand Visa: Eligible graduates may apply for the new 4-year Skills in Demand visa, providing a clearer pathway to permanent residency. This change aims to attract and retain skilled graduates in areas of high demand.

These changes aim to promote genuine study-abroad aspirants and skilled graduates. With over 570,000 international students in Australia, the government is committed to supporting graduates in achieving their career goals.

International students should visit the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses Overseas Students (CRICOS) for a list of government-registered courses that meet national quality standards. As the Australian government continues to refine its international education programs, students are advised to stay informed about the latest developments and requirements. By understanding these changes, international students can better understand the Australian education system and achieve their academic and career goals.
