Many Indian students are worried about their academic goals after Canada announced that its fast-track Student Direct Stream (SDS) visa program would be ending. By fulfilling certain requirements, like obtaining a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) to prove proof of money, students from select nations, including India, were able to expedite their study permit applications under the SDS, which was introduced in 2018.
With an estimated 427,000 Indian students presently enrolled in Canadian universities, India is the country from which the greatest number of international students come. This transition is noteworthy. In 2023, the SDS program had a significantly higher approval rate of over 70% and accounted for 60% of the 400,000 Indian students who wanted to study in Canada. On the other hand, applicants using the standard study permit faced much lower approval rates, dropping to just 10%.
Indian students will now need to apply through the standard study permit stream as the SDS program has been abolished, which could result in longer processing periods. Immigration officials, however, have guaranteed that the change will not affect eligibility and that the prerequisites for study visas will not change.
The decision to end the Nigeria Student Express (NSE) and SDS programs is intended to “strengthen program integrity” and provide a more fair procedure for overseas students, according to Canadian immigration authorities. It is also thought that Canada’s weakening economy and growing diplomatic tensions are impacting factors.
Alternative Options for Indian Students
This shift may lead some students to explore other study destinations or reconsider their plans due to potential challenges with longer waiting periods. Popular alternatives include:
– Australia: Known for its dynamic academic environment and exceptional research opportunities.
– UK: Renowned for its prestigious universities and rich academic traditions.
– US: Offers vast educational opportunities and renowned research facilities.
– Ireland: Boasts a strong academic reputation and a friendly community.
– New Zealand: Offers unique learning opportunities and a focus on sustainability.
Students whose applications were submitted under the SDS prior to the deadline of November 8, 2024, will continue to be processed through the expedited stream. Applications received after this date, however, will be processed normally. To reach their academic objectives, Indian students must re-evaluate their alternatives and take into account alternate study locations.
