Compared to the 13.42 million students that took the test in 2024, this figure is marginally lower. The Importance of Gaokao Since its renewal in 1977, Gaokao has played an important role in improving the lives of millions of people through merit-based selection. By 2023, the exam will have helped more than 47 million students enroll in Chinese colleges and universities by determining their eligibility for admission.
