Chinese Universities Regain Popularity Among Indian Students

Date:

A recent enhancement in diplomatic ties between India and China has ignited fresh interest in Chinese universities among students from India. The reestablishment of direct flights, simplified visa procedures, and pledges to promote academic and cultural interactions have led to this increase in interest.

Traditionally, aspiring medical students have been the primary group traveling to China for education, and they are expected to return in significant quantities. Nonetheless, courses related to engineering and artificial intelligence are becoming increasingly popular, as educational consultancies experience a rise in inquiries.

Prior to the pandemic, every year, 20,000-25,000 Indian students sought education in China. Nevertheless, during the pandemic, these figures dropped significantly, with only three Indian citizens citing education/study as their reason for traveling to China in 2021.

Enrollment figures significantly dropped during the pandemic years, with only around 8,580 Indian students coming back in 2023. Specialists now indicate that the restart of direct flights between India and China will greatly simplify travel logistics.

In spite of the positivity, several worries persist. Although concerns about restrictions from the Covid period have mostly diminished, certain families still exercise caution because of ongoing psychological effects from recent global events.

Competition from other study destinations is increasing as students are giving Europe more serious consideration. Nevertheless, China continues to be an appealing location, featuring seven universities within the global top 100 in the most recent Times Higher Education rankings.
