The recent actions taken by New Brunswick Community College (NBCC) regarding admission cancellations in Canada have ignited significant concern and frustration among affected students. Reports indicate that the college modified the deadlines for international students to submit their immigration documents.
The President of the Nigerian-Canadian Association of New Brunswick has highlighted that approximately 40 international students have approached him, expressing worries about NBCC’s recent decisions. The students initially received advice to submit their documents, including study permits, by December 8. However, a notice in September moved up the document submission deadline to November 17.
As per the reports, the new deadline added pressure on the students as the college posted a warning on its website, stating that any submissions after the new deadline would be deemed late. Moreover, late submissions could potentially lead to further cancellations of applications and admissions.
The matter got complicated as delays from Canadian authorities in issuing study permits made it impossible for students to meet the new document submission deadline. Further, shortly after the revised deadline, on November 20, the college sent emails to students who had not submitted their documents.
Furthermore, NBCC has ceased accepting applications from students in Ghana and Nigeria, causing significant disruption to their academic plans and increasing stress levels. Moreover, once students gain acceptance into a college or university, they typically become ineligible to apply to another institution, exacerbating this issue.
It’s noteworthy that NBCC reported hosting a record number of students during the 2021–22 academic year. However, the Canadian government has recently announced measures to restrict the issuance of international student visas to safeguard students from unethical practices within educational institutions.
