Global Hotspots for International Students: US, Canada, Australia and UK Lead the Way:

International student enrollments at the world’s most popular study destinations are surging, with the US, Canada, Australia and the UK emerging as the most popular options. Recent reports indicate that these nations have witnessed a significant rise in the number of international students, attributed to several causes like affordability, educational quality, university reputation and safety.

In the 2022–2023 academic year, the number of overseas students enrolled in the United States hit an all-time high of 1,057,188, up 12% from the year before. With 53% of all international students coming from China and India, these two nations continue to be the primary sources. It is expected that the United States will persist in drawing in foreign students, with estimates indicating an increase to 1.3–2.8 million by 2034.

Moreover, Canada has experienced a notable uptick, welcoming over a million foreign students in 2023, a 29% increase from 2022. With more than half of all international students coming from these two countries, they are the biggest source nations. With half of all international students attending, Ontario is still the most popular province. International student enrollments in Australia have increased by 17%, total of 943,977 as of July 2024.

For the eleventh year running, the number of overseas students enrolled in the United Kingdom has reached a record high, with 758,855 students for the 2022–2023 academic year. Notably, Nigeria is the next largest source country, behind China and India. With a 5% rise in international student enrollments, France has also seen growth, with 430,466 enrolled in the 2023–2024 academic year. China, Italy, Algeria and Morocco continue to be the top sending nations. China and India are the world’s most popular countries of origin for overseas students. China and India make up 53% of all overseas students in the US and more than half in Canada. China and India make up 22% and 17% of all overseas students studying in Australia, respectively.

Countries can attract international students, drive economic growth and establish themselves as leaders in the global education landscape by addressing these challenges and opportunities.
