International Students in Canada Face Challenges Amid Policy Changes

A recent study has shown the challenges encountered by international students in Canada, especially in obtaining housing and acquiring financial assistance. The study, carried out by Thompson Rivers University (TRU), surveyed more than 215 international students and discovered that over 55% experienced challenges in locating appropriate housing.

The research also showed that frequent international students face institutional racial bias in the housing market. Financial difficulties were common as well, with approximately one-third of participants reporting inadequate financial assistance or doubt regarding their financial circumstances.

These difficulties arise alongside policy shifts that have made the situation difficult for international students. The national government has introduced a two-year limit on international student visas, leading to a 35% decrease in undergraduate enrollments in 2024 and a further 10% drop in 2025.

Global students play a vital role in enhancing Canada’s economy, cultural variety and diverse society. Nonetheless, the recent alterations in policy have introduced uncertainty for numerous international students aiming to establish their futures in Canada.

The study’s results also emphasized the importance of universities expanding their international student demographics and offering additional support services, like tailored student assistance centers featuring peer mentoring.

Furthermore, the study suggested that policymakers should act to eliminate systemic obstacles in housing and employment that international students encounter.

By tackling the difficulties encountered by international students, Canada can guarantee it continues to be an inviting place for worldwide talent.
