International Students Thrive in Australia, But Calls for deeper Understanding:

Date:

International students in Australia have praised universities for providing exceptional support services, including mental health and wellbeing programs, value for money, and a sense of community. However, concerns persist regarding the perception of international students in wider society.

At The PIE Live Asia Pacific 2024 conference, students shared their experiences, highlighting initiatives that made their transition smoother. Chenai, a student from Zimbabwe, commended Torrens University’s 24/7 mental health support, “It’s not just international students, it’s a multi-faceted problem,” she said. While Dina, from China, appreciated Bond University’s weekly check-ins and free counseling.

Rachel, a Griffith University student, valued the peer support group Griffith Mates, which organized social events and airport pick-ups. Barsha, from Nepal, acknowledged Southern Cross University’s support but faced challenges finding work in her field.

Students also discussed the recent visa fee hike, with some, like Angelo from Brazil, viewing it as a worthwhile investment in their future. They took the opportunity to share their opinion on the costs involved with pursuing education in Australia, particularly surrounding visas fees since the visa fee for international student visas rose from AUD$710 to AUD$1,600 in July this year. However, others, like Chenai, criticized biased media coverage, which she believes unfairly blames international students for housing problems. The conference emphasized the need for a more deeper understanding of international students’ experiences and contributions to Australian society. By listening to students’ voices, educators and policymakers can work towards creating a more inclusive and supportive environment for all. While universities are exceeding expectations, concerns surrounding perception and policy measures remain.
