To expand Saudi markets, international schools had to go “beyond Riyadh”:

Date:

Recently, the International and Private Schools Education Forum took place at Friends House in London, where the high regard for the British Curriculum in Saudi Arabia was prominently highlighted. The Royal Commission for Riyadh City (RCRC) also praised the British curriculum. According to experts, Riyadh and the broader kingdom present an exciting opportunity for educational institutions. Reflecting on the situation five years ago, experts noted there was scepticism about whether it was optimal to establish British Curriculum schools in Riyadh. Today, there is increased appreciation from both Saudis and expatriate families.

Sean Davey, director of Reigate Grammar School International, emphasised that opportunities extend beyond Riyadh. He highlighted Sharjah as a key location already attracting new British international schools. He further noted that Saudi Arabia offers beautiful, unexplored areas ideal for British school establishments. The country is undergoing significant changes, with multiple schools planning to open in September, not just in Riyadh.

The forum also addressed concerns surrounding LGBTQ+ rights in Saudi Arabia and the broader Middle East. Experts pointed out that same-sex marriage is not currently recognised by the Gulf Cooperation Council, despite past demands for policy amendments. A panel of representatives from prominent Middle Eastern law firms discussed past incidents and general conduct regarding LGBTQ+ issues. While there have been some changes regarding same-sex marriage and rights for the LGBTQ+ community, a complete transformation will take more time.

Overall, the forum underscored the growing appreciation for the British curriculum in Saudi Arabia and highlighted the expanding opportunities for British international schools across the kingdom. The discussions also reflected the ongoing societal changes and the challenges that remain in areas such as LGBTQ+ rights.
