111% of international students increase in Australia in 2023

Australian Bureau of Statistics reports an increase of 111% in international students from 28,030 in 2022 to 59,240 in January 2023. 

In January 2023, a total of 59,240 international students moved to Australia. There is a sharp increase in the enrolment rate. As per the Australian Bureau of Statistics, earlier 28,030 international students arrive in the country. There is a rise of 111 percent in 2023.

The number of international students is yet to restore concerning the pre-pandemic level. There is a decline in the enrolment rate by 34.4 percent after 2019. Out of the students coming to Australia, around 19,770 students are enrolled in a higher education institution.

According to the data, 13,610 students are enrolled in Australia’s vocational education and training. Further, 4,960 students are in school followed by 4,250 students in the ELICOS sector. As per the reports, the enrolment rate in the ELICOS (English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students) sector has increased by 865 percent.

Chief Executive Catriona Jackson is overwhelmed to see campuses filled with international and local students. Jackson further mentions that the economy is booming and all thanks to the education sector. Prior to the pandemic era, the education sector was contributing $40 million to the economy of Australia which helped in sustaining 250,000 jobs.

In 2022, 613,327 international students were attending educational institutions in Australia. However, China and India are the leading countries sending students to Australia followed by Nepal, Vietnam, Colombia, and Thailand. Most of the international students coming to Australia in 2022 were enrolled in colleges and universities. Australian government cleverly took a step forward to attract international students. The government planned to extend the working hour limit from 40 hours to 48 hours per two weeks.
