There is a hike in international applicants in 2022 in Australia. The total number of foreign students reached 613,327 in the year 2022.
The Australian government released data that the number of students enrolled in the educational programs was 613,327 from January to November 2022. There is an increase of 7 per cent in the enrolment rate of international students.
The number of students enrolled in the higher education sector in 2022 was 360,358 however there is a decline of 1 per cent as compared to 2021. In 2021, 365,443 international students were enrolled in colleges and universities in Australia.
As per the reports, the leading countries sending their students to Australia are China (155,348), India (99,739), and Nepal (56,847) followed by Vietnam and Colombia. The number of students in the VET sector has decreased to 270,878 in 2022 meanwhile students in English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students (ELICOS) have increased. There is a spike of 80 per cent in overseas students studying ELICOS.
International students who chose Australia for their studies are facing difficulties since there is a lack of accommodation in Australia and an increase in rent prices. The rent prices have risen by 20 per cent in certain residential areas. The situation of accommodation can be difficult to deal with as students from China are expected to return to Australia after Beijing declared that online degrees won’t be recognized by the country.
The total number of international students in 2021 accumulates 570,626 even after a decline of 17 per cent in comparison to 2020. Around 51 per cent of foreign students were enrolled in higher education in Australia. The travel restriction in 2020 led to a drop in the number of applicants in Australia.
Australian states that have the highest number of applicants in 2020 were New South Wales and Victoria with 238,000 and 165,000 overseas students respectively.
