Indian agents and students switch gears under new Canadian restrictions:

Date:

In 2023, the relationship between India and Canada experienced fluctuations, ranging from the deportation of Indian students to the implementation of a cap on international student intake in January 2024. Thus, resulting in a series of challenges and opportunities. The temporary intake cap is expected to lead to approximately 360,000 approved study permits at the undergraduate level.

Initially, the headlines generated tension among stakeholders in the international education market. However, despite these challenges, Indian students have continued to demonstrate interest in studying in Canada. According to data released by CBIE, out of the 319,130 Indian students studying in Canada in 2022, 209,930 were pursuing bachelor’s degrees, 80,270 were pursuing graduate degrees, and 28,930 were enrolled in diploma or certificate programs.

Several changes were implemented in Canada, including an increase in the cost of living requirement from CAD $10,000 to CAD $20,635. Additionally, restrictions on public-private partnership institutions have posed challenges for students. With the introduction of the cap, gaining admission to previously sought-after colleges will become more competitive. Experts advise students to explore universities and colleges in lesser-known areas. According to data, some students who initially planned to pursue Arts and Humanities courses in Canada are now considering alternatives in Western countries or closer to home.

Moreover, colleges in Ontario have become increasingly popular among Indian students, with many aiming to pursue academic and work opportunities in the province, given its access to cities like Ottawa, Toronto, and Mississauga. Brampton, in particular, holds appeal due to its high population of Indian origin. Initially, study-abroad aspirants and their families struggled to interpret the student visa cap announcement, leading to concerns about their future prospects in Canada. However, subsequent clarifications helped alleviate these concerns. Despite the challenges, Canada remains popular among Indians due to its attractive work permits, job opportunities, world-class education, safety, and options for permanent settlement. Therefore, Indian students should continue to consider Canada as a viable study destination.
