Recent reports highlight a significant decline in the processing of Canadian study permit applications submitted by Indian students. Between July and October 2022, the Canadian government processed approximately 146,000 new study permits for Indian students. This figure starkly contrasts with the preceding year, where the same period saw less than 87,000 permits processed—an alarming 41% decrease.
This decline translated to a stark reduction of 60,000 student visas processed between July and October 2023. The most pronounced shortfall occurring from August to October represents a 47% decline compared to the figures from 2022.
Initially, there was a promising surge in interest from Indian students, with 25% more study permit applications processed in the first six months of 2023 compared to the previous year. However, this trend took a downturn, largely attributed to diplomatic tensions between India and Canada. Additionally, the rising cost of living in Canada dissuaded many potential students from choosing the country as their study destination.
Furthermore, reports indicate that starting January 2024, international students will face even higher living expenses, as the cost of living set by the IRCC is expected to rise. This may further impact the attractiveness of Canada as a preferred study option for prospective students.
Despite this decline in Indian student applications, Canada has witnessed a positive overall impact in terms of diversity among its student populace. Notably, between July and October 2023, there was a marked 34% increase in study permits processed, demonstrating a robust 52% growth in international student numbers compared to the previous year.
